Renault Dauphine poster. The rear-engined 4-door Dauphine was launched in 1956 to replace the highly successful Renault 4CV. The Dauphine was originally intended to be called The Corvette, but the name was changed to Dauphine (the female form of the French feudal title of Dauphin) to avoid confusion with the recently-launched Chevrolet Corvette. Production ceased in 1968 after a total of 2 million models had been sold. Renault also developed a Dauphine Coupe and even a convertible called the Floride. Dauphines were economical and reliable but prone to corrosion and because of this, not too many survive. (available at Art Of Motring).
